Watson Knock Gives Australian Selectors Timely Reminder

Shane Watson has given the Australian selectors a lot to think about after his brilliant all-round display at the Sydney Cricket Ground which unfortunately went in vain for him and his side.

The 34-year-old all-rounder, who probably was on his last legs leading into the final game of the three-match Twenty20 International series against India, crunched his career-best 124 off 71 balls while opening the batting, on Sunday (January 31). He returned with the ball and picked the wicket of Shikhar Dhawan and then gave away just five runs in the 19th over to maintain the pressure on the visitors.

This was also the second-highest score ever in the newest format of the game, behind Aaron Finch's 156, and it is bound to breathe fresh life in Watson's career with talks of him being an uncertainty in Australia's 15-member squad for next month's ICC World Twenty20 in India.

Forced to lead the side in the absence of Finch, who missed out due to a hamstring injury, and the unavailability of regular stars, the veteran all-rounder wasn't really utilized fully in the first two matches. In the first outing at the Adelaide Oval, he came in to bat after debutants Travis Head and Chris Lynn. Watson's strength has been at the top where he gets time to get his eye in before going on an all-out attack mode. He did exactly that on Sunday.

The Australians have been a little too conservative in their approach and haven't really changed their plans when there was a need to do so. In that sense, it is perhaps surprising that Chris Lynn and Travis Head batted ahead of Watson and James Faulkner in the earlier games. Coming in when the required run rate is hovering over 10 can be unnerving for any batsman and for someone who has batted for a better part of his career at the top, Watson was finding it difficult to fuel Australia's charge while batting at No. 6.

"It's challenging, there's no doubt," he had said after the second defeat at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Watson also admitted that he wasn't comfortable acing spin when fresh at the crease.
