Dimitri Mascarenhas To Step Down As New Zealand Bowling Coach

Dimitri Mascarenhas, New Zealand's bowling coach, will step down from his position at the end of the series against Australia, the country's cricket board announced on Friday (January 29). Mascarenhas, the former England medium-pacer who took over coaching duties from Shane Bond, said the decision to quit eight months into a two-year contract emanated from a need to spend to more time with family.

"I really need to spend more quality time with my family - they're my number one priority," he said. "I had an amazing time with the team. It's probably been the best time I've had in cricket, either as a player or as a coach. In the future I hope I can re-visit this sort of role. The children are young now and that's where I need to be. But it's definitely the type of job I'd like to return to."

The 38-year-old Mascarenhas took over as bowling coach in March 2015, after Bond vacated his position to take up a similar role with Indian Premier League franchise Mumbai Indians. Mascarenhas's responsibilities also included involvement in New Zealand Cricket's coach education initiative and the high performance centre's winter and A squad training programs.

Heaping praise on the Englishman's contributions, head coach Mike Hesson said, "Dimi has brought a vibrancy to the group and is well liked by everyone. We're sorry to be losing him. We all appreciate the hard work that he has put in over the past year and the knowledge he's passed on to the bowling unit.

"While obviously disappointed, we understand that family comes first and the demands of the international calendar are not always compatible with that. We look forward to having him with us through to the end of the Australian series and wish him well for the future."
